The University of Hong Kong (HKU) organised a 111th Anniversary Celebration cum Tech Landmark groundbreaking ceremony for its Tech Landmark project on July 23.
The Tech Landmark, targeted to be completed in 2024, will host 12 institutes dedicated to strategic research with a strong focus on interdisciplinary studies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, smart materials, quantum science and biomedical engineering. It is set to become a hub for innovative thinking, learning, teaching, research and entrepreneurship.
Chief Executive of the HKSAR and HKU Chancellor Mr John Lee officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony. Mr Lee said: “A remarkable feat by itself, the Tech Landmark is but one part of the University’s Grand Plan, which will also see the development of a new Pokfield Campus and the expansion of the Medical Campus. These new developments will surely help the University position itself at the forefront of developing Hong Kong into an international Innovation and Technology Hub, a role supported by the National 14th Five-Year Plan.”
The Tech Landmark is not only a new milestone for the development of HKU as the University enters its second century, but it is also a prelude to a series of ambitious projects combining humanities with world-class innovation and technology. The upcoming infrastructure projects include the Global Innovation Centre – a World Class Lab for Research & Deep Tech, the sustainable and smart facilities on the Pokfield Campus, the HKU-Shenzhen Campus as well as other facilities required for recruiting and nurturing talents.
As HKU is celebrating its 111th Anniversary this year, Professor Xiang Zhang shared his vision to propel HKU in its global leadership role. He said: “We are gathered here to celebrate 111 years of HKU and over a century of excellence and leadership. Countless women and men have dedicated their work to the cause of this university, and we pay tribute to each of them. Today, we re-commit ourselves to use our knowledge to serve the people of Hong Kong and mainland China and improve the state of global humanity. The groundbreaking of Tech landmark is preparing us for ‘tomorrow’s world’, to expand understandings on ageing, smart cities, and big data, and apply these to benefit social good.”
The Tech Landmark project is a strategic move for the University to respond to the national 14th Five-Year Plan, to promote the development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong, and to establish Hong Kong as an international innovation and technology centre. HKU will contribute to the country’s scientific and technological development by providing excellence in education, research and talent cultivation.

Tech Landmark 預計在 2024年落成 ，內設 12 所研究院 ， 從事人工智能（AI）、大數據、智能材料、量子科學和生物醫學工程等跨學科研究 ，為港大重點研究基地，成為創新思維、學習、教學、研究和創業的樞紐。
香港大學校監、香港特別行政區行政長官李家超出席動土儀式。他致辭時說︰「香港的大學肩負培育年輕一代發光發熱的重任，政府會全力支持大學的發展 ，並期望各大學能貫徹此重任。」他對港大的計劃讚譽有加，他說︰「 Tech Landmark 設計非凡，而這也只是港大宏圖之一 ，未來還包括蒲飛路校園和醫學院擴建等。港大這些建設 ，完全符合國家十四五規劃將香港建成國際創科中心的政策 ，港大定能保持其在香港創科路上最前沿的位置。」
港大踏入第二個世紀，Tech Landmark項目不僅是港大發展的重要里程碑 ，也為大學未來連串結合人文學科與世界級創新科技結合的項目展開序幕。未來幾年的前沿基建項目，還包括設有世界級研究及深科技實驗室的全球創新中心（ Global Innovation Centre）、蒲飛路校園的可持續發展及智慧校園空間和港大--深圳校區以及為延攬及培育人才所需的居住及其他設施等。
今年正值港大成立 111 周年，校長張翔教授分享了他推動香港大學邁向全球領導地位的願景︰「香港大學成立111周年，讓我們向這跨越世紀的卓越成就致敬，向無數對大學作出無私奉獻的人們致敬。巍巍學府，使命傳承；大學將更努力以知識回饋社會，服務香港和國家，彰顯人文關懷。 Tech Landmark動土 ，見證以開拓知識 ，應對未來 ，憑藉對老齡化社會、智能城市、大數據等重大課題的研究應用 ，將創新科技和方法改善社會民生。」
Tech Landmark計劃是港大響應國家「十四五」規劃、致力推動香港創新科技發展、確立香港成為國際創科中心地位的重要一步 ，將為國家加快科技建設作出學術、研究及培育人才方面的貢獻。
